There are various interpretations of this painting, at first glance it’s simply lots of animals travelling on a boat or better recognized as the iconic ark. If you look more closely it’s filled with humour and irony, as you notice the wonderful juxtaposition of exclusively farmyard animals sailing on the ocean. Alongside Jean’s belief that the ark was a strong environmental symbol safeguarding animals and plants, it was also a metaphor for her, portraying how nature will do what it does (possibly rain), so all we can do is our best to assist (ergo, the boat). It’s a bit like making the best of any situation. This painting could also be simply depicting an aquatic barnyard, with the added details of a vine filled with grapes and an olive tree, possibly as snacks.
