Cat on the Beach Poster

This artwork was inspired by a painting that was created after a trip to Sri Lanka in 1993, where Jean noticed a cat sitting on a beach, appearing to be looking at the moon. Although very similar in layout to the original painting of a black cat hiding in the grass with a very big moon view, the waves were originally filled with a pattern that subdued the overall blue colours. Jean wanted to paint a new version where the blue hues would be more striking and vibrant in contrast with the red fish, grasses and moon. By simplifying the visuals Jean rendered this new painting more graphic in design, like a silk screen print, still managing to infuse her artwork with a subtle sense of humour. Upon finishing the painting, she said, “It looks like the cat is watching his dinner.”
